“A coup is generally defined as the violent seizure of the government by its people,” the Coup website reads. “But what does one call it when the people are violently seized by its government? We call it an opportunity for revolution.”

Pro-vegan restaurateur and bar owner Ravi DeRossi (Mother of Pearl, Cienfuegos, et al) has teamed up with Sother Teague, legendary barman and former chef for Alton Brown, and bartender Max Green to debut Coup, a charitable bar which opens in Cooper Square this Friday, April 14. This 100% not-for-profit cocktail bar will donate all proceeds to causes the team feels are being oppressed by the current administration.

“Everyone has his or her reasons for not liking the current administration,” says DeRossi. “For me it’s many fold, but if I could boil it down to one issue, it would be equality... So, what we've created is a cocktail bar that encourages discussion, love, respect, acceptance and above all, creates a community where we turn our angst and despair into something beautiful and positive.”

A lineup of top bartenders from the U.S. and around the world will be making guest appearances, mixing their own custom concoctions to supplement the regular libations. They include David Kaplan (Death & CoWalker Inn), Giuseppe González (Suffolk Arms), Jim Meehan and Jeff Bell (PDT), Jane Danger (Mother of PearlCienfuegos), Nick Bennet (Porchlight), Ivy Mix (Leyenda, Speed Rack NYC), Erick Castro (Polite Provisions), Sarah Morrissey (Pig Bleecker), Alton Brown (Host, Iron Chef), and more. (Schedule)

For each drink purchased, guests will receive a wood token to be dropped into a jar labeled with the organization or charity initiative most important to them. Organizations and causes curated by Coup, which support social, economic, environmental and human rights groups, will be rotated on an ongoing basis.
